Fire

Remember - rule zero of Hackspace is “don't be on fire”!

  • Power down the equipment you are using.
  • Immediately exit the building by the most direct route (see below) without stopping to collect belongings.
  • Meet at the muster point, on the other side of Queen Victoria Street.
  • Call 999. The building's system will not alert the fire brigade.

If you discover a fire, and the alarm is not already sounding, you can trigger it using a red break-glass box. These are located in the following places:

  • In the Main Room, beside the fire escape.
  • In the lobby, next to the front door.
  • In the CNC Room.

There are two fire exits from our unit:

  • The main front entrance
  • The fire door at the rear of the Main Room.

In the event of a false alarm, you can reset the alarm using the instructions on the control box. The alarm control box is located in the cupboard under the stairs just outside of Hackspace's inner door.

Note that our alarm system is shared with the other tenants of Unit B (ie - our upstairs neighbours). Before you reset the alarm system, make sure it truly is a false alarm!

Water and CO2 extinguishers are located in the following places:

  • In the Main Room, beside the fire escape.
  • In the lobby, at the bottom of the stairs.

Hackspace's inner entrance door is held closed with a maglock, and released by a switch on the wall. In an emergency, if the release system fails, you can override it using the green break-glass next to the door. This cuts the power to the door allowing it to open. It will not trigger an alarm.

Where activities are identified as having a heightened fire risk - eg welding, grinding, or other hot work - these activities should only be carried out in accordance with an agreed Safe System of Work, which has been signed off by the Directors and Landlord.
