Title: Laser cutter computer

Submission Date: 15/1/2016

Current Status: Approved

Proposer: Oliver Humpage

Description:

Purchasing of a new laser cutter computer. The current one is very slow and old, and jobs take a long time to render on it.

Proposed grade A refurb computer: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03412787

Spec on this model:

  • Intel Core i5 2400 3.1GHz
  • 4GB Ram
  • 250GB HDD
  • DVD RW
  • Windows 7 Pro Installed (upgrade to Win 10 is free and I have a written guarantee it's compatible with this machine)

I’ve gotten these refurbs before, they’re always “as new”, and HPs are usually fairly tank-like. Being a small form factor, it’s probably less hackable than a normal big tower (esp if it has an external PSU brick). But equally that means it could live up on the desk under the monitor = less dust and kicking issues.

Budget:

  • £228 for the PC

Funding source/model:

Hackspace funds

Resources depended upon:

Oliver along with any other sysadmin type members to set up the machine, install laser software, transfer files from old laser computer.
