Becoming a Member

To become a member, you need to:

  • Visit the Hackspace on a Thursday open evening, to get a tour of our space meet some of our members.
  • Give us your details (name, address, email, photo) and accept our Terms and Conditions, via our sign-up form.
  • Set up a monthly standing order to our bank account for your membership fee.

When we see your first payment arrive in our bank account, we will contact you to confirm your membership and add you to our Google Group. Please note that the Directors are volunteers who do this in their spare time, so processing your membership can take a few days.

Accessing the Hackspace

You will also need to arrange with the building management to get a card and key for the building. When we have confirmed your membership payment, we will forward your details to the building management, who will then get in touch with you to arrange the payment of £40 to them for the keys (£20 fee, £20 deposit). Please also note that the building management prefer to process these requests in batches, so the delay before receiving your keys can be quite long.

Your Membership Fee

Your membership is a rolling monthly subscription, paid by standing order (or other form of direct bank transfer). The amount you pay is your choice, relative to the amount of use you feel you get from the space. As a minimum we recommend £10, and most members pay between £10 and £20.

Bristol Hackspace aims to be accessible to as many people as possible, including those with reduced or irregular incomes. If you need to discuss affordability, contact the directors.

We do not accept payment in services or by any means other than monthly direct bank transfers.

Who Can Be a Member?

Anyone who is 18 or over can be a member of the hackspace, unless they have previously be banned.

Memberships are issued for named individuals only, we do not offer corporate, shared, or family memberships. You can bring your friends and family members as guests, please see our Guests and Children Guide.

We are happy to accept members whose memberships are paid by a sponsoring organisation, but these memberships are still solely for the use of the named individual.

Ending Your Membership

To end your membership, you need to:

  • Inform the directors.
  • Cancel your standing order.

Your membership will expire exactly one month after your last payment was received.

When your membership to the Hackspace ends, you must return your keys to the building’s management. We will also contact them to advise them that your access card should be deactivated.

When the building owner receives your key and card back, he will organise returning your £20 deposit.

Termination of Membership

The directors can terminate your membership if they decide your continued participation is harmful, or likely to be harmful, to Hackspace. This may be made as a result of:

  • An investigation into formal complaints made against you.
  • You failing to respond to multiple requests to settle a significant debt to Hackspace.
  • Your membership payments having stopped.

A resolution to terminate a membership must have the support of a strict majority of the directors to pass. Termination takes immediate effect, unless by the grace of the directors.

The directors will give at least 14 days notice of a meeting where sanctions such as terminating your membership is up for discussion. This is to allow you reasonable opportunity to make representations in advance. In exceptional circumstances the directors may ask that you do not use Hackspace until the decision has been made.
