Title:

Tormek T-7 Low-RPM Water-Cooled Grinder, with jigs

Submission Date:

Proposer:

Alistair Fraser

Description:

Tormek T-7 Grinder with jigs for sharpening hand tools, including wood turning tools, chisels, knives, plane blades, and other woodworking tools.

We've had a lengthy discussion on the Hackspace group thread extolling the virtues of this system, but here are the main benefits in comparison to the current setup: -Safer: Low-speed so does not need to be bolted down, does not produce sparks (dangerous in an environment full of kindling), easier to control. Plus, the better the tools are sharpened - the safer it is to use those tools. -More accurate: system of compatible jigs and mounting allows superior, repeatable results (no more double-bevels on the turning tools!). -More useful: A wider range of tools can be sharpened, and grinds achieved. E.g. the swept-back wings of a spindle gouge with a fingernail grind which cannot be accurately sharpened on a high-speed grinder. With this system could be achieved within 30 seconds.

It can be purchased/run/maintained by the proposer (Alistair Fraser), and reimbursed by the Hackspace.

Proposed Purchase:

I have seen an advert on a Facebook group (Woodturning UK), for the item described above listed for £450 with wood turning and hand tool jig packs. The most similar deal for a new item that I can find online is the lesser T-4 grinder with the same jig packs (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tormek-T-4-Sharpening-System-HTK-706-Hand-Tool-TNT-708-Woodturners-Kits-717661/400885099959?hash=item5d569d2db7:g:kSYAAOSwpDdVBb0P) which totals £650 - so I think this may be a good opportunity to secure some great kit.

Proposed Installation:

It can be stored on the shelf underneath the high-speed grinder, and taken out and used on the benchtop opposite when required (it does not require bolting to a surface).

Budget:

£450 + postage (if approved by seller), otherwise collection from Portsmouth must be arranged.
